Fire from oil tanker blast hurts 20 in Chandpur

A fire broke out at a multi-storey building that originated from an oil tanker blast on Bangabandhu Road in Chandpur town early today, leaving 20 people wounded including seven with burn injuries.

Six among the burn injured -- Nuru Mohammad, 21, Raihan, 23, Mijanur Rahman, 50, Badsha Miah, 50, Masud Hossain, 28, and Belal Hossain, 35, -- are being treated at the burn unit of Dhaka Medical College Hospital.

The incident took place around 12 midnight when a dealer was unloading oil from an oil-tanker of Padma Oil Company in front of the three-story building, which caught fire instantly, reports our Chandpur correspondent quoting officials of Fire Service and Civil Defence Department.

There were a number of drums containing highly flammable chemical in a shop housed on the ground floor of the building, the officials said.

Five firefighting units rushed to the spot and brought the situation under control after three hours of frantic efforts.

Ratan Dutta, assistant director of Fire Service Department, North Range, said they were able to douse the fire but the amount of total loss could not be estimated immediately.

Seven of the injured were rushed to Chandpur Sadar Hospital from where the six were shifted to DMCH.

Among the six shifted to DMCH, four suffered 80 to 90 percent burn injuries and the two others had 50 to 60 burns, Belal Hossain, a doctor of Chandpur Sadar Hospital Said.
